The Last General Conference

It feels like just yesterday I was writing last week's email. So here we go again.

This week I went the hospital! It wasn't an emergency but my toe is having problems. Basically the doctor said that I need a surgery to fix it. The problem is after the surgery I have to just sit around for an entire week, which on the mission stinks because I work everyday and sitting around doing nothing would be terrible. So I explained that I would be going home in May and just getting some medicine that could get me there would be enough. So that surgery will be delayed until it becomes worse or I get home. Now it's a race of some kind, one that I'm not a big fan of.

We got some work done on some of our couples! We woke up bright and early, (at 5:30) to go to the registry to get a birth certificate. Upon arriving and asking for the cost of a birth certificate, the lady informed us "it depends on you." I was super confused. We asked "no really how much does it cost?" Once again she replied "the cost depends on you." I was like ???? So after a moment we handed over 200 Metacais (about $3-4). Afterwards, our investigator explained that it was normal and the amount you pay determines how quickly they do the paperwork. Of course they won't attach a fixed value but if you don't pay enough they'll tell you to come back the next day, and the next, and the next, until they do it. The trouble is, everyday you have to go back is just more and more money you spend on transport. Fortunately, 200 Metecais is enough to get it on the same day. So, that part is all squared away.

Another random story this week, the mission recently closed a few of the missionaries houses, and as part of that, they have to move a lot of stuff around. Some of that stuff came to our house. Some of it was nice, like a bigger table or shelves to put stuff on. Some of it wasn't as nice, like a fridge full of rat poop or a greasy, greasy stove. I guess now we have to find places to put all this random stuff, but hey, new stuff!

Now general conference. As of now I have all of the sessions except for Saturday Night and Sunday Evening (because of time zones). All in all I enjoyed it. They talked a lot about Christ, being kind to others, and many other smaller topics. I had heard that President Nelson didn't speak in the first three sessions so when he finally spoke Sunday morning I listened quite attentively. His message about stopping negative talk was cool to hear. It is definitely something I want to work on (though I do an alright job already).

This general conference is my last one on the mission, I definitely enjoyed it. Also this week it seemed like everyday someone reminded me of how little time I have. I don't know why or how. One day I was on an exchange and some random member in the other area was like "hey Elder McDonald, you're going home soon." I have no idea how this member knew this, but he succeeded in telling me and keeping the streak going.

But until next time,
Elder McDonald
