Baptizing Babylon

Remember last week when I mentioned unexpected expected problems? Yeah we had a lot of those this week. But of course it was still a good week and often it's important to remember that Hey, it's Africa™️

Tuesday we had our usual ward family night activity. And as usual everyone showed up super late and we ended up running the activity, but it was super solid. We played some simple games and everyone had fun.

Wednesday and Thursday the zone leaders were here Elder F Alberto stuck with us and it was cool seeing him again. He is super chill and a solid missionary. Because he would be riding with us we had to get one of our spare bikes in good working order. So I did some small repairs and because of my immense amount of charity and humility I gave my nice bike to Elder Alberto and I rode the spare. And man that bike was terrible. 20 minutes after leaving the house the seat broke and we had to get a spare. During the whole exchange I was just tired of biking around on that barely rideable piece of junk. I was very happy when I got my nice bike back.

On Thursday we had 6 baptism interviews and Elder Alberto our zone leader needed to do them. So we showed up on time to find that none of the people being interviewed had. They showed up an hour later and of course 6 interviews takes a long time so we spent the rest of the day getting the interviews done.

Then on Saturday we had the baptisms. Everyone as usual showed up a little late, but once everything got started it ran pretty smoothly. As part I had the privilege of baptizing Babylon, one of the brothers of a member. The weirdest part about his name is that it wasn't BabilĂ´nio like it would be in Portuguese but Babylon spelt in English. Like his legal name is Babylon. So I got that achievement under my belt now.

Saturday was also when our power went out. Fortunately, the member who fixes stuff for the missionaries (the Elders Quorum President) got back from a trip the same day. So to save "bull in a ditch" (me trying to quote scripture) he came to our house on Sunday to fix our power. Well he tested the wires and found that two of the three wires that run all the power to our were getting power but that one wasn't. So he went outside to another power box to see why. Well, he opened up the box to see why and found out really fast. What happened you might ask, well, I'll bet you never guess. Go ahead try. Nope, a snake slithered into the box made itself a living wire and burned itself alive, destroying the wires at the same time. It was crazy and when he opened it he honestly got startled. Also not only was it a snake but it was also a black snake. To explain, in Mozambique there are two main snakes the green and black. Green snakes are chill and just sometimes scare people. Black snakes are also fairly chill but if they bite you, you die (unless you can get to the hospital and get treated in about 30 minutes). This is the first time our Elders Quorum President has seen anything like that in the twelve years he has been an electrician. But hey we have power now.

All in all, things are going good, this week are transfers. I have no idea what is going to happen, but I will almost definitely be staying. But as usual we still have no information.

That's all for this week. Until, next week,
Elder Andrew McDonald
